Schools within the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust organised a series of activities to celebrate the Victory in Europe (VE Day). The events aimed to honour those who sacrificed their lives during the Second World War and to reflect on the importance of peace.
Staff and pupils across the Trust joined the two-minute silence and prayer for VE Day, reflecting on the value of peace and remembering the lives lost during the war.
Mrs Katie Worton-Geer, headteacher of St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Cheshunt, said “Our school marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a whole school assembly, the lighting of the school candle, a two-minute silence and a prayer. During the assembly, we discussed the importance of marking such an important historical day to remember the lives lost in war and the peace that followed.”
She added that each class took part in various VE Day activity, including making and decorating flags and medals, writing prayers for peace, completing a VE quiz and crafting model spitfires.
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School located in Waltham Cross, pupils focused on the history of VE Day through a range of 1940s-themed activities. Mrs Katie Moseley, headteacher of the School said “Last Friday, we held a VE Celebration Day to honour our heroes. Many children came to school dressed in 1940-style red, white and blue outfits. In the morning, they created flags to wave at our afternoon street party, where everyone participated in some traditional 1940s games, songs and dances and of course, afternoon tea treats.”
Mrs Moseley concluded, “This event served as a wonderful reminder of why we must continue to pursue peace through strength.”
