Hola! Pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Waltham Cross enjoyed a colourful celebration of Spanish language and culture on Monday 12 October, marking Spain’s National Day with a range of activities across the school.
Each class explored a different Spanish-speaking country or region, discovering its traditions, food, music, art and geography while learning about the rich cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
Headteacher Katie Moseley said: “It was wonderful to see our pupils embracing different cultures with such enthusiasm and curiosity. From music and dance to art and language, the activities brought learning to life and helped children develop a greater appreciation of the diverse world around them. It was a fantastic celebration of creativity, learning and cultural understanding.”
In Nursery, children explored Spanish greetings and food before creating colourful mosaics inspired by Spanish artist Antoni Gaudí. Reception pupils discovered Ecuadorian culture and welcomed a parent speaker who shared insights into the country.
Year 1 pupils turned their attention to Argentina, producing fact files and clay sculptures inspired by Argentinian artist Marcelo Martin Burgos. Meanwhile, Year 2 brought Colombian culture to life through traditional music, dance and creative crafts.
In Key Stage 2, Year 3 put their newly acquired Spanish language skills into practice through interactive games while exploring Spanish music, dance and cuisine. Year 4 discovered Mexican food and dance traditions, creating their own menus inspired by the country's cuisine.
Year 5 investigated the Canary Islands, with a particular focus on their volcanic landscapes, while Year 6 explored the ancient Maya civilisation in Guatemala, researching the historic city of Tikal and its surrounding rainforest and wildlife.
