Encouraging young children to brush their teeth regularly and understand why good oral hygiene matters can often be a challenge for parents. At St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Cheshunt, Reception pupils have been discovering the importance of looking after their teeth through a series of fun and engaging activities.
As part of their current topic “Myself”, the pupils explored how to keep their teeth clean and healthy through hands-on learning experiences.
The pupils practised squeezing a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto their toothbrushes, helping to develop their fine motor skills while learning good brushing habits. They then had fun brushing away pretend plaque from model teeth and exploring dental equipment, including dental mirrors, to become more familiar with what happens during a visit to the dentist.
Executive Headteacher Katie Worton-Geer said the activities offered a fun and practical way for the children to understand the importance of dental hygiene while developing their confidence and independence.
The school also thanked a local dentist for kindly providing toothpaste to support the activities.
Prospective families wishing to learn more about the school's learning environment and meet the staff are warmly invited to attend the upcoming EYFS Open Day on Monday 23 November 2026 at 9:30am.
