  • St Paul’s History and Geographic Week Helps Pupils Explore the Local Area

St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Cheshunt, part of the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust, launched its first whole-school Geography and History Week to inspire pupils to explore the rich history and geography of their local community.

The week-long project, held from 8 to 12 September, featured a wide range of activities tailored for different year groups. Headteacher Mrs Katie Worton-Geer explained that the initiative aimed to strengthen pupils’ geographical skills, highlight the importance of fieldwork, and encourage them to “think like historians” by exploring how the local area has changed over time.

Each year group engaged with a different aspect of the local community. Year 3 visited Cedars Park to study its geographical and historical features, while Year 4 explored St Mary’s Church, examining both external and internal surroundings. Year 5 took part in a workshop at Cheshunt Library, where they also investigated the surrounding area to identify physical and human features and learn about the library’s historical significance. Meanwhile, Year 6 enhanced their digital literacy by researching significant historical figures connected to Cheshunt.

Teachers reinforced the learning by linking local history and geography through fieldwork and cross-curricular activities. With the use of “skills stars”, pupils were encouraged to think and act as historians and geographers, broadening their understanding of the world around them.
