  • St Mary's Student Secures Prestigious Williams Racing Engineering Placement

A Year 12 student, Ryan K, from St Mary's Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford, part of St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust, has secured a highly sought-after engineering work experience placement at the Williams Racing headquarters after successfully progressing through a highly competitive selection process involving more than 3,000 applicants.

Ryan's journey began when he was introduced to the “icanyoucantoo leadership and personal development programme during a school launch assembly ley by the programme’s founder, Nilesh. Inspired by what he heard, Ryan applied early in Year 12 when applications opened and was delighted to be accepted onto the programme.

As part of the programme, Ryan attended an engineering experience day at Williams Racing, where he first learnt about a work experience opportunity with the Formula 1 team. Following a rigorous selection process involving more than 3,000 applicants, he successfully secured a place and spent a week at the Williams headquarters gaining invaluable engineering experience.

Reflecting on his journey, Ryan said: "When I first joined the programme, I wasn't a confident speaker at all. Now I feel much more prepared for the world beyond school and have found my voice."

He added: “The programme is not just about professional experience, it also offers many amazing career and subject-specific opportunities to help students develop their interests and prepare for life after A Levels.”

Ryan also expressed his appreciation for the opportunities available through St Mary's Catholic School:

"I'm incredibly grateful to St Mary's Catholic School for introducing me to the “icanyoucantoo” programme and for encouraging me to make the most of every opportunity. The support I have received has given me the confidence to aim higher."

Deirdre McHugh, Headteacher of St Mary’s Catholic School, said: “Ryan's achievement is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when young people embrace the opportunities available to them. We are incredibly proud of his determination and the way he has made the most of every experience. We are also grateful to organisations such as “icanyoucantoo” and Williams Racing for investing in the next generation by providing opportunities that inspire, challenge and develop young people. Experiences like these can have a lasting impact on students as they prepare for university, apprenticeships and future careers."
