More than 150 Year 5 pupils from primary schools across the Trust took part in a Science Enrichment Day at St Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford. The day provided an exciting opportunity for pupils from across the Trust to experience science beyond their usual classroom environment, inspiring curiosity and enthusiasm through practical learning.
For many of the pupils, it was their first time visiting science laboratory, and they were excited and curious to explore the environment and discover the laboratory equipment. They received a warm welcome from the science teachers at St Mary’s Catholic School, who introduced them a range of scientific concepts through interactive, hands-on activities.
The pupils learnt how to use microscopes to examine tiny details that are difficult to see with the naked eye, including the patterns on leaves and very small print. They also explored how light travels, and reflects, as well as the concept of light refraction.
Both pupils and primary school teachers were grateful for the opportunity to take part in an interactive science lesson in a secondary school laboratory.
Mrs Bekiri, Year 5 Class Teacher at St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, described the day as a valuable experience for primary pupils, giving them the opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge through hands-on learning in a secondary school laboratory. She also thanked the Science subject team at St Mary’s for welcoming and teaching the young pupils.
One pupil from St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School shared how much she enjoyed using a microscope to examine tiny objects and said she was looking forward to having more opportunities to take part in science activities in the future.
