St Joseph’s Celebrates Diversity and Unity with First World Flag Day

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Bishop’s Stortford recently launched its first-ever World Flag Day, celebrating the rich cultural diversity within the school community while reinforcing a strong sense of unity and belonging.

Throughout the week, pupils explored the national flags connected to their heritage, with many children researching and celebrating more than one country to reflect their family backgrounds. They learnt about the colours, symbols, meanings behind their flags and shared what makes them feel proud of their heritage.

The celebrations culminated in a vibrant flag procession led by the St Joseph’s banner and the school’s house flags. Pupils proudly displayed their individual flags while walking together to symbolise that, although the school community is made up of many different backgrounds and traditions, everyone belongs to the St Joseph family.

To mark the occasion, pupils were also invited to wear the colours of their national flags, creating a colourful and joyful atmosphere across the school.

Headteacher Ann Cassidy-Jones said: “World Flag Day has been a wonderful opportunity for our children to celebrate who they are and where they come from, while also recognising the importance of unity, respect and belonging. We are incredibly proud of the diversity within our school community and the way our children embrace and learn from one another every day.”
