Pupils at St Paul's Catholic Primary School in Cheshunt recently enjoyed an exciting Enrichment Morning designed to broaden their understanding of different careers while developing their communication skills.
The morning began with a mystery as classroom equipment mysteriously disappeared, transforming pupils into detectives. Working collaboratively, they examined clues, created detailed suspect descriptions, and confidently shared witness statements with the police.
After solving the case, pupils met a range of professionals, including a police officer, community pharmacist, domestic carer, and children’s author. Through engaging conversations and thoughtful questioning, they learnt about the skills, responsibilities, and experiences involved in each role.
Throughout the morning, pupils discovered a common thread linking every profession they explored: the importance of strong oracy skills. Whether solving crimes, caring for others, supporting patients, or inspiring readers through stories, effective communication is key to success.
The event clearly made a lasting impression on the children. One Year 5 pupil said, “I loved the police coming in and it felt like I was part of a real investigation. I think I would like to be a police officer and do this for a job.” A Year 4 pupil added, “I couldn't believe it when I arrived at school and all of our equipment went missing. Then we met the police, and other people. I learnt so much from this.”
It was a memorable and inspiring experience that celebrated teamwork, curiosity, and confident speaking and listening, while encouraging pupils to think about their own future aspirations.
